The Heart of Compassion

Always remember the suffering of beings, including ourselves and others. Maintain a soft, tender heart.

Chinese calligraphy: "Sorrow/ Compassion." Sumi ink on rice paper.

“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”

Moon and Its Reflection

A autumn moon and its reflection. Heaven and earth are melted and united in the gentle moonlight and cool atmosphere. Everything is deep and transparent.

This original etching work is inspired by the beauty and mystery of nature, especially the moon and its reflection in a landscape setting. The technique is using brush strokes from traditional Chinese landscape painting, then transferred onto etching plate. The images size is 8.25 x 11 inches. The paper size is 11 x 15 inches. Artist proof, unique print. Artist signed.

Three Pears

Inspired by the Zen art. Simple marks could be most interesting and effective. Simplicity often implies humor. Sumi ink on raw silk, mounted on acid free thick paper. The actual size of the painting is 13 by 10.5 inches, with frame and mat is 21 by 17 inches. Signed with the seal of the artist's name.

The Space and the Landscape

We exist in the space. Everything needs space. We have tremendous space within and around us. Between everything, everyone, every living being, there is the need for the balanced, healthy space as the base of a good relationship.

Chine-collé is a special technique in printmaking, in which the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. This work is combined with etching and Chine-collé (textured rice paper.) It is an original etching work inspired by the beauty and mystery of nature, and the spacious and meaningful space of the traditional Chinese landscape painting. The images size is 8.25 x 11 inches. The paper size is 11 x 15 inches. Artist proof, unique print. Artist signed.

All Things have Yin and Yang Aspects

All things have yin and yang aspects. They are complementary, not opposing forces. The so-called dualities such as female and male, dark and light, low and high, cold and hot, water and fire, weak and strong..., all but the manifestations of the yin-yang. In Chinese ancient science "I Ching", the supreme source of yin-yang is "Tai Chi". When we favor one over the other, the natural balance is lost in between the two elements, the disaster happens.

Abstract is an Open Status of Your Subconscious Mind

"Abstract is an open status of your subconscious mind." The world is more than what we perceived with our limited senses. Have faith in that.

"Koi Series" is a body of work inspired by the mysterious and wonderful pattern and color of the Japanese Koi fish. The original works are done with sumi ink, in some cases, with acrylic pigments.

Crossing

Willingly or unwillingly, we are always passing through something. Day changes into night, summer changes into autumn, ebb and flow of life has its natural rhythm. If our minds are open, we can enter the vast possibilities. The morning star will arise from the horizon. We will pass all the challenges and trials.

This work is an original etching inspired by the beauty and mystery of nature and life. The images size is 6 x 6 inches. The paper size is 11 x 15 inches. Artist signed. Limited edition.

Longevity

Chinese calligraphy: "Longevity" 壽, in cursive script style (grass-hand). Original work. Unframed. A life of longevity is wonderful, but a long, meaningful life is blissful. Without meaning, life is an empty journey filled with things that can not completely satisfy us. We will never be content and happy if we lead a meaningless life.

Black sumi ink on textured red color, golden dragon line background Chinese rice paper. 12" by 13". Signed with the seal of the artist: "the heart of the Buddha." The calligraphy itself is professionally double-mounted on another piece of thicker rice paper, so the surface is totally flattened. Ready to be put into a frame.

Earth, Water, Fire, and Air

Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space - all the elements that composed this world from ancient universal system. It is actually not too far away from modern scientific theories. For example, in our body, the flesh, muscle and bone are earth; the blood and liquid are water; heat (temperature) is fire; and our breath is air - all these elements have tremendous space in between, as modern physics has proved.

Since we are composed with elements, our wholesomeness depends on the balance of them. Too much earth, we are too heavy; too much water, we will be swelling; too much heat, we have a fever; not enough air, we are winded. All kinds of illness come from the imbalance of the elements. It can extend to very subtle levels.

Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche said in his book "Healing with Form, Energy, and Light": "... If we relate to the natural world as a collection of lifeless mechanical processes, it is lifeless for us. If we relate to our bodies as machines, they are machines to us. If we relate to religion as a fantasy, it is a fantasy to us. But if we relate to the natural world as alive, full of spirits and elemental beings, the natural world speaks to us... Thinking in terms of the elements does not mean giving up our understanding of modern chemistry, physics, medicine, and psychology. The elements give us a more fundamental metaphor that helps to explain the dynamics that lie beneath these different disciplines."

"Four Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air"- Archival quality digital prints (giclee prints), each one is an individual piece. The image size of each one is 6 by 6 in., the paper size of each one is 8 by 11 in. Sold four pieces as a group; frame not included. Signed by artist. Limited edition. All Beings Have Buddha Nature

Chinese calligraphy: "All Beings Have Buddha Nature, 眾生本具佛性" in semi-cursive style. Original work. Unframed.

All beings have this precious, kind, awake Buddha Nature. Here, it is our human nature. We don't think about it much, but we all want to love, and love to be loved. If a person knows love, and longs for love, he or she would know what is buddha nature. There is no doubt about that.

Sumi ink on textured gray color with golden flakes Chinese rice paper. 13.5" by 21.5". Signed with the seals of the artist.

Neither Here Nor There

Tibetan word "Bardo", means "intermediate state", "in-between state". We are neither here nor there; we are floating in an uncertain space. Everything is possible. The vast possibilities totally overwhelm us.

Things are seemingly real. In the same time they are not. We could go either way. Only our mind is our anchor at this crucial time.

"Neither Here Nor There" - mixed media with metallic gold color on rice paper, mounted on canvas. The size is 36 by 26 inches. Signed with my name (seal).

Autumn Sadness

Sadness

The unspoiled colors of a late summer night,

The wind howling through the loft pines –

The feel of autumn approaching;

The swaying bamboos keep resonating,

And shedding tears of dew at dawn;

Only those who exert themselves fully

Will attain the Way,

But even if you abandon all for the ancient path

of meditation,

You can never forget the meaning of sadness.

~ A Zen Poem from Master Dogen Zenji 道元禪師

Chinese calligraphy: "Autumn", sumi ink rice paper. The size is 12 by 15 in.

Moonlight

Once I looked at the autumn sky, and there is this bright half moon. It is brilliant and silent, a silence with tremendous strength.

The earth is strewn with clear light.

Past, present and future, which is more real than this moment of cool air? This breeze, this shivering existence? We are all the same after all: the same lonely person on the land, between heaven and earth we are standing alone.

Listen to the world around us. Then we are not so alone...

The painting: Mixed media with metallic gold color on rice paper (a kind of strong fiber mulberry bark paper), mounted on canvas, ready to hang. The size is 36 by 30 inches. The seals are an image of a moon at the top, and a round abstract shape at the bottom.

Patience

"Patience" is a great virtue that has tremendous power. Patience is quiet and persistent; patience can move the mountain.

Benjamin Franklin said: “He that can have patience can have what he will.” Leo Tolstoy wrote in his "War and Peace": “The strongest of all warriors are these two — Time and Patience.”

In patience we will have joy. The smile comes from patience is the mark of a true warrior.

This Chinese calligraphy: "Patience". Sumi ink on rice paper, mounted on paper. The size is 10 by 15 in. The seal is: "The Way (Tao)."

At This Moment - In the Mid Day of Summer

Summer, in the mid of day. Close your eyes: envisioning all things are happening. At this moment, every sentient being in the world is going through different things: some are born, some are dying; some are fighting, some are loving. Some are laughing, some are crying. Some are thinking how to help others, some are trying hard to exploit others.

Under the same sun, beneath the same light, there are so many things happen in the world. What we are going through, maybe no different than people had gone through thousands years ago. The world is vast, and the time is limitless. Our suffering and joy are always the same. What we want is more or less the same, too.

No matter where you are, hope you enjoy this moment of peace and openness.

Chinese character: Summer. Sumi ink on rice paper. 10 by 12 in.

Gem Lake

It is night. You walk out of the house to the woods. The strong smell of early summer grass after the rain shower. Moist and sweet air. You look at the sky and know it is vast. Your mind is vast, too. It contains everything: every possibility and every person you have encountered, will encounter. Your heart is full. You remember everything and everyone.

This is a night like a deep, bottomless lake. You walk in and keep going deeper. Appreciation and gratitude arise. Love and longing arise. It is one of those nights you only have yourself but you also have everyone with you. Like a still lake - You don't even know how deep it can be; how much it contains.

Gem Lake. Mixed media on rice paper, mounted on canvas. 25 by 36 inches. The two seals on the left are an image of a lotus, and the wording "Heart of Buddha".

HUM!

According to the venerable Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's teachings, the Sanskrit seed syllable HUM is the sound connects with "energy"; HUM represents "the state of meditation when awareness breaks out the limits of ego." Fart!

The Zen story goes like this: There was a practitioner (also a famous poet) after long time of sitting, he was really proud of his accomplishment; he wrote a poem describing how good his sitting was. So the master tested him by saying: "He is nothing but a fart!" The practitioner heard this got very upset, he ran across the river to argue with the master. And the master smiled: "You said your meditative power is so strong, nothing can move you now - but just the air of a fart can blow you over!"

One Stroke

One stroke; one taste 一味.

"Many things happen as you sit. You may hear the sound of the stream. You may think of something, but your mind doesn't care. Your great mind is just there sitting. Even when you are not aware of seeing, hearing, or thinking, something is going on in big mind. We observe things. Without saying "good" or "bad", we just sit. We enjoy things but have no special attachment to them. We have full appreciation of them at this time, that's all."

From Shunryu Suzuki: Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness.

Mind, Spirit, Energy

神,it pronounces as "shen". A Chinese character which has a few meanings:

1. a deity
2. preternatural; magical
3. mind; spirit, 心神
4. (a person's) energy, 神氣
5. (an) expression, 神情

In the Shambhala language, in Trungpa Rinpoche's renowned book, Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, the seventeenth chapter is called "Natural Hierarchy." Rinpoche talked about three principles, which in Tibetan are called lha, nyen, and lu. Lha, 神, refers to the divine, or to "the highest points on earth." Nyen refers to the human domain, or to "the great shoulders of the mountains... includes forests, jungles and plains." Lu refers to "water being," or to "oceans and rivers, the realm of water and wetness," They also refer to seasons. The world has its order, power, and richness. He then said: "The discovery of natural hierarchy has to be a personal experience - magic is something you must experience for yourself."

Original calligraphy, ink on paper. The size is 10 by 10 inches. The seal is an image of a bird, which is part of one word of my first name.

Samsara and Attachment

The attachments get us going. Any kind of attachment will do. To love, to hate, to little things, to big things. To a person, to some notions. All the attachments get us going all the time: day after day, or, in Buddhism philosophy, we say life after life.

Silent Hour

SILENT HOUR

Whoever weeps somewhere out in the world
Weeps without cause in the world
Weeps over me.

Whoever laughs somewhere out in the night
Laughs without cause in the night
Laughs at me.

Whoever wanders somewhere in the world
Wanders in vain in the world
Wanders to me.

Whoever dies somewhere in the world
Dies without cause in the world
Looks at me.

Welcome Spring! "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life"

Some things in life are bad they can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewin' on life's gristle, don't grumble give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best

And always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life

If life seems jolly rotten there's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that's the thing

And always look on the bright side of life
Come on, always look on the bright side of life

From MONTY PYTHON - "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life"

Chinese calligraphy: Welcome Spring. Sumi ink on paper. The size is 8 by 12 in. The seal is: "Chin's heart."

Nothingness

Chinese calligraphy: "Wu, (in Japanese sounds like) Mu, Nothingness, 無" in semi-cursive style. Original work. Unframed.

The Japanese and Korean term mu or Chinese wu meaning "none; without" - it is a key point in Buddhism, especially the Chan and Zen traditions. It mean "no", "not", "nothing", or "none". Nothing happens thus everything can happen.

"In Buddhism there is no place for using effort. Just be ordinary and nothing special. Eat your food, move your bowels, pass water, and when you're tired go and lie down. The ignorant will laugh at me, but the wise will understand."
By RINZAI 臨濟禪師

“Nothing is born, nothing is destroyed. Away with you dualism, your likes and dislikes. Every single thing is just One Mind. When you have perceived this, you will have mounted the Chariot of the Buddhas.”

Patience

Chinese calligraphy: "Patience, Endurance". In Chinese origin, which is a kind of pictorial language, this word looks like there is a knife above the heart - patience has great virtue and great strength, it can take a lot. In the modern sense, "patience" also means slowing down, not hasty; be gentle to ourselves and others. "Being agressive, you can accomplish some things, but with gentleness, you can accomplish all things." As the great master Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche cited in his book "Ruling Your World."

Joy

Life could be painful. Nothing is really what we expected. There is always something or someone that annoys us; sometimes it could be very overwhelming. We cry, we laugh, we feel indifferent... we go through everything at any given moment. But when you step back and look: all is very amazing - and beautiful - this precious life!

Let us enjoy every living moment, and love each other, love our life - why not? If this is all we have?

Space, and Things - Koi Series

In yoga, "resting is as important as doing," in painting, space is as important as things.

The fish can graciously swim in a big body of water; the bird can fly high in the vast sky. Things are active, but space is supporting. We often ignore the space since it is passive. But it is where life can happen. All things exist in the space.

This painting: Koi Fish - is a giclee print from one of my original Koi Fish Series. The original painting is done with ink and acrylic on rice paper, mounted on acid-free paper (some larger ones on canvas). Here I am playing with the space. Marks and space. Active and passive. Where there is a harmony it would come from the relationship between space and things.

Love needs space; love is space.

Dance with Me

It is a cold day. Let's dance, dance with me. Dance with this element of frozen water; dance with the winter brisk air; dance on the hard, icy ground. The wind can be cold, but the heart can be warm. Dance with  a warm, moist human heart. It is warm and kind always, deep within.

Windhorse

Chinese calligraphy: "Windhorse, 風馬, Chi", in cursive style (also called "grass script"). If you have good "windhorse" (in Tibetan), which is good energy, good chi, you will have vitality, and, you will be able to accomplish everything. Original work. Unframed.

As Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche explains:
"In the warrior teachings of Tibet, windhorse, or lungta, means vitality. When we have windhorse, our life moves forward in the way we want. On the inner level, windhorse is connected with good life-force energy, which is connected with being able to have a proper feeling for our mind. If we have the ability to feel at home in our mind and direct it, the mind becomes a support and a friend. If we are unable to harness the mind, it becomes a nuisance to us, aggravating our lives with worry and bad dreams. It can even make us sick. Happiness comes from actions that take us forward.

To move forward in daily life, we must be steady and brave. To create this bravery inside, we must learn how to handle our mind. Knowing this, the warrior practices meditation every day to know the mind and harness its energy for the good of all."

Middle Way

Chinese calligraphy: "MIddle Way", in semi-cursive style (also called "Running Script"). "Middle Way" is the best way; a balanced way. Original work. Unframed.

According to Sakyong Mipham Rinpche's book: "Ruling Your World":

"People often mistakenly think that middle refers to the way between the two extremes of eternalism and nihilism, between existence and nonexistence. But middle refers to the fact that this approach surpasses existence or nonexistence. It is a balanced view.

According to this view, things exist on a relative level—we have a name and an address, and the car we drive takes us to a restaurant. The objects of our sense perceptions—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch—appear, but they are not inherently permanent. On an ultimate level, they are as ephemeral as last night’s dream. They are beyond the hope and fear of eternalism and nihilism, beyond the concepts of real or not real, existing or not existing."
