An evening of Sumi ink and brush strokes – an introduction to Traditional Chinese Calligraphy and Brush Painting by Yeachin Tsai. Mrs. Tsai will demonstrate the principles of these ancient disciplines and discuss how the practice can bring us vividly into the present moment. The evening will include a demonstration and contemporary artwork presentation.

Yeachin was born in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to New York City in 1993. She received MFA degree at CUNY,  Brooklyn College. Yeachin has practiced calligraphy and brush painting for over 40 years, having learned from traditional Chinese Masters. Since moving to NYC, her work evolved into an unique style of “New Ink”, a colorful expression that retains its roots in Chinese painting and embraces the explorative impulse of Western abstraction. When a Warrior Facing Death

I don't know anything thing about death. It is very difficult to even think about this subject. I keep my teacher Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche words in my mind: "Death is my friend, the truest of friend, a true friend that never abandons me... yet death allows life." Chinese Zen/ Pure Land Master Yin-Quang reminded his pupils to put the word "Death" on their forehead when they practice, to remember how precious life is, and how much we should not waste life.

Many great masters have talked about death, yet is is still terrifying and untouchable for most of us. However, it is something that everyone will face one day. All beings come to life will die, that is the simple, genuine truth.

Quotes by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the Swiss-born psychiatrist and author who gained international fame for her landmark work on death and dying, regarding "Death":
"Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow."

"Dying is an integral part of life, as natural and predictable as being born. But whereas birth is cause for celebration, death has become a dreaded and unspeakable issue to be avoided by every means possible in our modern society. Perhaps it is that in spite of all our technological advances. We may be able to delay it, but we cannot escape it."

To quote Trungpa Rinpoche's words: "the Genuine Heart of Sadness" -- that open, raw and tender part of our heart that is touched by our experience. Ani Pema Chodron said that remaining in touch with this tender, vulnerable feeling is what keeps us from becoming thick-skinned and closed-down to our experience. Kyeho! All activities within samsara are pointless and hollow—
Unreliable and fleeting, like lightning's streaking dance,
And there is no certainty as to when death will strike.
Still, since death is certain, limit idle plans and speculations,
Allow the teacher's instructions to hit home and strike a chord,
And, single-pointedly, in solitude, seek perfect certainty of mind.
Mind, which is like lightning, a breeze, or passing clouds,
Is coloured by its various thoughts of everything under the sun,
But when examined thoroughly is found to lack a basis or origin.
Just like a mirage on the horizon, it is devoid of essential nature.
While being empty, it appears; and while appearing, it is empty.
Left to settle, naturally, by itself, mind arrives at a genuine state of ease,
And, when familiarity grows stable, mind's natural condition is seen.
If devotion to the teacher grows vast, blessings will enter and inspire the mind,
And when accumulations are gathered and obscurations purified, realization will dawn—
So take this practice to heart, carefully and with constant effort!

Living Fully

Living fully in this present moment. Feeling the space in between things. Have some humor. Light-hearted but seeing clearly. The expectation of the future and the memory of the past are both fleeting, changeable. Nothing is as permanent as it seems.

Heaven, Earth, and Human

"In the ancient philosophies of both China and Japan, the three principles of heaven, earth, and man expressed this view of how human life and society could be integrated with the order of the natural world. These principles are based on an ancient understanding of natural hierarchy. I have found that, in presenting the discipline of warriorship, the principles of heaven, earth and man are very helpful in describing how the warrior should take his seat in the sacred world. Although politically and socially, our values are quite different from those of Imperial China and Japan, it is still possible to appreciate the basic wisdom contained in these principles of natural order. Heaven, earth, and man can be seen literally as the sky above, the earth below, and human beings standing or sitting between the two.

If we apply the perspective of heaven, earth, and man to the situation in the world today, we begin to see that there is a connection between the social and the natural, or environmental, problems that we are facing. When human beings lose their connection to nature, to heaven and earth, then they do not know how to nurture their environment or how to rule their world—which is saying the same thing. Human beings destroy their ecology at the same time that they destroy one another. From that perspective, healing our society goes hand in hand with healing our personal, elemental connection with the phenomenal world."

Forgiveness

Chinese character: Forgiveness. Forgiveness is never easy. To forgive, is to let go - let go of our holding on. If we can let go, we can move on.

It is hard to truly forgive others, or to forgive ourselves. Somehow the ego wants to hold onto something, otherwise the lightweight feeling could be overwhelming, unbearable. We think hatred makes us alive - but it is the opposite. It makes us dead, stale, not moving.

Forgiveness is powerful. It manifests tremendous inner strength.

Iceberg - The Seen and Unseen World

Iceberg. The seen and unseen world. What we perceive is only a very small part of the unlimited, vast net of coincidences. Everything has to come together in a timely manner in order to make something happen. It is mysterious. However we can sense their existence.

It Is a Good Day!

Every day is a good day, every moment is a good moment. Every moment is so subtle, and precious, that we can use it in infinite ways: to have a good thought, bad thought, nasty thought, noble thought, or neutral thought... then, from that thought, the action, either virtuous or non-virtuous, will follow. Then we create our "Karma" - "action" in Sanskrit.

The mystery is: it is so ordinary, there is actually no mystery. Every moment is decided by us.

Meditation has taught me that we always have the opportunity to seize the moment. The greater trust we have in ourselves, and the more conviction we have in our goodness, the more strength we will have to seize it. With self-doubt and lack of conviction, our past negative actions gain momentum and the joy of the present is awash in doubt and fear. Then the future looks dismal. If we as humanity feel good about ourselves, we will grab this particular moment with great conviction before it washes away. Each of us holds human destiny in our hands. It will be completely determined by how the mind feels about itself.

Going West

Going west: be luxurious, generous, and bold. In Vajrayana Buddhism, the Five Buddhas Families, also known as the Five Wisdom, represent five distinctive energies. West is red, it is fire, it is lotus; it is magnetizing, and subjugating. It could be seductive.

According to Trungpa Rinpoche, "True Perception", he said:
"True padma (lotus) art is very luscious and colorful, absolutely brilliant color. It also has curves and shapes. One stroke of color doesn't make your mind interested in it, but padma art has curves, like a lotus."

Buddha is Not Far Away

Buddha is not far away; buddha (awakenment) is in our everyday life. Every thought, speech and action can be awake and cheerful. Every breath can be joyful. We can help the world by being awake and present in the moment.

In our mind and heart, we already have the the seed of awakening - like the seed waiting for the spring rain to sprout. We all have tremendous goodness inside. It is there, never diminished. We can recognize the goodness and cultivate it.

People went through some serious illness or other unusual circumstance knowing that time is not really as solid as we think it is. Especially when we recall the past memories of our lives, everything is so vivid; it is like they never diminished in any way.

If the understanding of time is not linear, instead, it is always present, like some people who has been there and come back telling us... Then, we might have more compassion, more forgiveness, more understanding, and less regrettable actions... We might appreciate every moment and everyone more deeply.
